Adding and subtracting matrices seems intimidating, but it's one of the simplest things you can do. There is only one rule.

The Golden Rule: You can only add or subtract matrices if they have the *exact same dimensions*.

You can add a 2x3 matrix to another 2x3 matrix. You CANNOT add a 2x3 to a 3x2.

If the dimensions don't match, the operation is impossible, or 'undefined.'

Once you confirm the dimensions match, the process is incredibly easy.

You simply add or subtract the corresponding elements.

The number in the top-left corner of the first matrix gets added to the number in the top-left of the second.

The number in the top-right gets added to the number in the top-right. And so on.

You are just doing a bunch of simple addition or subtraction problems in an organized grid.

The resulting matrix will have the exact same dimensions as the ones you started with.
